Around 60 members from 22 barangays of the Federation of Senior Citizens Associations of Bacolod City were taught on how to recycle plastics and make them into crafts in the recent Seniors’ Day at the mall held at the Event Centre of SM City Bacolod.
United States Peace Corps volunteer Rachael Saler, who introduced the Bag-O Plastic project to a group of women in Bago City, conducted the lecture and demonstrated on how to crochet use plastic bags into attractive, fashionable and saleable crafts such as hand bags, purses and wallets.

Bag-O Plastic is an environmentally-conscious livelihood project geared towards low-income women of Bago City who are determined to provide financial support for their families while also reducing the negative effects of plastic waste. The project was initiated by U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, Rachael Saler, in cooperation with Bago City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and Bago City Environmental & Natural Resources Office (ENRO).

Public Relations Officer Lorena Martinez also encouraged senior citizens to bring used plastic bags and donate them to Bag-O Plastic to help the women of Bago City sustain their supply of materials.

The Seniors’ Day at the mall was highlighted by the group birthday celebration wherein celebrators for the month of April blew their cake candles while their fellow senior citizens sang Happy Birthday.

Seniors’ Day at the mall is a regular event held every second Tuesday of the month at SM City Bacolod. A project under SM Cares Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the mall’s Committee on Senior Citizens affairs introduces new programs for senior citizens where they can learn new knowledge, develop camaraderie among peers and recreate at the same time.

Last month, the Negros Economic Development Foundation through its executive director Ms. Rose Depra conducted a seminar on modern backyard farming to more than 120 senior citizens. Now becoming a lifestyle for the senior citizens, the next Seniors’ Day at the mall will be held on May 10, 2011.
