The SM Supermalls’ Corporate Social Responsibility program, SM Cares, through the SM Committee on Youth and Children’s Welfare, held the National Children’s Book Day on July 20, 2010 simultaneously across 38 SM malls nationwide.

At SM City Bacolod, the celebration was attended by the pupils and teachers of Trinity Christian School, Fr. Gratian Murray Integrated School, A. Mabini Elementary School, A.L. Lizares Elementary School, Vista Alegre-Granada Relocation Elementary School and Abkasa Elementary School.

The National Children’s Book Day was highlighted by Storytelling Sessions hosted by ABS-CBN TV hosts Carmela Gamboa and Honey Grace Catalan who told the stories “Why Do Birds Build Nests?” and “Yummy Fly Pie,” respectively, from 2 – 4 PM at the mall's Northwing Event Centre. A total of 500 books were also donated to the five elementary public schools in order to help augment book shortage in their libraries.

Part of the program was the Character Costume Contest in which kids showcased their favorite children's book characters. The three best character costumes from Trinity Christian School won prizes from SM management.

There was also an entertainment by World of Fun mascot, Woffy and SM Little Stars 2009 winner Gabrielle Louise Ramos rendered an intermission number.

Together with partners from the Department of Education (DepEd), the National Book Development Board (NBDB), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Vibal Publishing and SM Foundation, the NCBD hopes to cultivate a love for reading and inspire kids into reading early to further boost a child’s development.
