Deco's opens

In 1938, a young Ilonggo culinary entrepreneur, Federico Guillergan Sr., (nickname, Deco), pioneered in serving a soup from a mixture of meat stock flavored with locally concocted condiments, herbs and spices. His invention became an instant hit as hungry customers crowded his makeshift carinderia inside La Paz Public Market in Iloilo City. From the lowly cargadores to well-heeled matrons of Iloilo high society, all flocked to his humble place inside the market.

The fame of the biting, hot soup became widespread that it attracted Chinese businessmen in the city. To cater to their clamor, Deco added noodles to the soup. Whenever satisfied customers would ask him about the name of his invention, he would jokingly answer, “BAT-CHOY”. The rest is history.

Today La Paz batchoy comes to you in various combinations, Meke Batchoy, Bihon Batchoy, and Misua Batchoy.

With one’s choice of Pre-war Pandesal; Manapla Puto; or equally historical pandesal ni Pa-a, a bowl of La Paz batchoy will prove to be filling and satisfying.

Chicharon toppings, generous helpings of garlic, unlimited hot soup and an indulgence of green spring onions can be readily had in all Deco’s La Paz Batchoy outlets.

Get a taste of Ilonggo History!

Global Pinoy Center

December 10, 2009, Mall of Asia, Pasay City --- SM recognizes the challenges our modern day heroes, the overseas Filipinos workers, go through everyday. They leave the country and their loved ones to try their luck and work abroad in order to support their families. This is why SM Supermalls, as an early Christmas treat to our hardworking Pinoy workers abroad, has formally launched the first Global Pinoy Center on December 10 at the 2nd floor North Arcade, SM Mall of Asia.

The Global Pinoy Center is a one-stop shop for services specifically tailored for the Global Pinoy and his family's needs. By being a member of the program, one will enjoy the following services by visiting any Global Pinoy Center:

  1. Info Services. The Global Pinoy member will have the convenience of getting updated, relevant and valuable information, such as finding information on investment opportunities. Prospective OFWs can also benefit from the Global Pinoy Center, as it accommodates several terminals with access to government employment agencies like POEA, OWWA and DOLE, making it easier for them to finish their paperwork and to get important materials from the International Electrotechnical Commission. Also, since the center is situated inside the mall, it permits applicants to procure necessary information without difficulty.
  2. BDO Remittances. The member's family can pick up remittances directly from their loved ones, even on weekend and holidays, creating instant hassle-free transactions.
  3. Communication. The GPC is a contact point for the present and former OFWs, balikbayans, and their relatives. At the GPC, families of OFWs can talk to their family members overseas using email, chat, and videoconferencing for free.
Each member is also given a Global Pinoy Card, which entitles him and his family a wealth of privileges up to a toal of PhP80,000 worth of discounts in education, health services, hotels, restaurants and various shops. For example, a member may avail 20% off tuition fee in Asia Pacific College or 15% off in National University.

The Global Pinoy Cards lets OFWs and their families enjoy rewards, discounts and freebies from SM Supermalls and other partner establishments. It also grant access to the Global Pinoy Center lounge and to several fun events and informative seminars held by SM Cares, making every family's stay at SM Supermalls worthwhile.

Any overseas Filipino worker who has an active contract abroad is qualified for membership. All one has to do is completely fill out the Global Pinoy Membership Application Form and submit it with any valid ID (for Global Pinoys and former Pinoys) or any ID and proof of remittance (for beneficiaries) at any Global Pinoy Center.

Fifty years ago, Henry Sy, founder of the SM Group and chairman of SM Prime Holdings, redefined how Pinoys shop by putting up his first department store in Quiapo, Manila. Now, through the Global Pinoy Program, SM Supermalls has achieved another milestone – by giving our present-day heroes a one-stop hub and a card that opens a world of privileges and convenience just for them and their families.
